Kamloops offers Plenty of Worthy Golf

By Allan Melbourne
I never get tired of a trip through the mountains, especially when there’s golf at the destination. My golf buddy and I had toured the Kamloops area of British Columbia several years ago and there were a couple of courses we missed, so I reached out to the good folks at Tourism Kamloops.

The team there were terrific to work with and helped us get in the most rounds in a short time. There’s no  shortage of great courses to play in the area, including Tobiano, Kamloops Golf Club, Talking Rock Golf Resort and The Dunes at Kamloops. We had a great drive through the mountains despite some minor road work delays. When all the work is completed and it’s four lanes through the mountains it will make for an even more enjoyable and quicker trip to this golf hot spot!

Rivershore

On our way into Kamloops, our first round was at Rivershore Golf Links. Rivershore is about 20 minutes from Kamloops along the South Thompson River. We arrived a little early for our tee time  and it was a good thing as I was hungry and we had time to enjoy a terrific lunch in the restaurant prior to our round.

This desert-like setting has been home to several championships and was designed by the legendary Robert Trent Jones Sr. The course features five sets of tees making it very playable for golfers of all levels. From the tips at 6,970 yards to the forward tees at 5,458 and plays to a par 72.

Rivershore is a very walkable course with a number of ponds and some 90-plus bunkers to maneuver your shots around. You will find generous landing areas which allow you to hit driver on the longer holes. We were fortunate to have been paired up with a member who expertly guided us around the course and gave us the lines to hit (thanks Eric!). Rivershore was a great course to start the 2019 BC adventure. More
