High in the Blue Ridge Mountains just across the Virginia state line from Mount Airy, N.C.,  is not the place one expects to find a spectacular golf course designed by an English gent. The place, known simply as Primland, is a wonderfully secluded 12,000-acre escape that’s nearly the size of Bermuda….

Golf architect Donald Steel, a graduate of St. Andrews University, chose Primland’s ridge top property to work his magic. He then created the sweeping Highland Course at Primland. It was named one of America’s best new courses by Travel + Leisure Golf in 2007 and has risen to the lofty perch of No. 13 in Golf Digest’s ranking of America’s 100 Greatest Public Golf Courses. More
